The Restoration Workshop

Sample Image

Always a hub of activity at the show, the Workshop attracts crowds with many sessions having standing room only, and for good reason.

Mike Coman and his expert team from Gilbert-Michaelson run various sessions throughout the day covering topics focusing on lead loading, panel work, and paint polishing and how to remove defects. Vital skills for anyone working on their own restoration project or own a classic.

As with all features of the show, this isn’t just a sit back and watch feature, Mike and the team encouraged visitors to speak to them and ask any questions about maintaining and restoring classics.

What you can expect

Lead Loading

Favoured by high end coach builders and car manufacturers on cars such as Rolls Royce, Jaguar and Ferrari for many years, Leadloading is somewhat of a "dark art".

In this ever popular session the team will discuss the plus points of lead and also the pitfalls to be aware of when using it. They will show you the equipment needed to be able to do your own lead repairs, the stages of the repair and how to finish your repair.

It is a very popular session and you will be able to ask the team questions at the end should you need to.

Panel Making

The "wheeling machine" or "English wheel" is having a resurgence in interest within classic car circles everywhere. In this session basic panel fabrication techniques using the wheel are demonstrated.

The team will also explain what can be done at home in your garage even if you haven't the luxury of a wheeling machine, using basic tools that are easily accessible.

Paint Polishing

We all want the best finish possible on our classics and in this session the team will talk about and demonstrate the techniques used when polishing a fresh paint job on a car and also how to remove defects from a paint finish.

They will explain the different types and grades of abrasives and show you how to use tools to achieve the best finish. They will also show you how to do it the old fashioned way, by hand.

As ever they will be answering questions after the session.
