Joe Lawrence – 1991 Rover Metro GTi

Joe Lawrence – 1991 Rover Metro GTi

The Rover Metro was launched in 1990 with the original GTi model powered by a fuel-injected 16-valve K-Series engine making 95bhp. Performance was lively with 0-60mph in a claimed 9.0 seconds.

Joe always wanted one but insurance was too expensive at the time, but he finally managed to buy this example in 2020. “I saw it parked on a driveway and asked the owner if he’d sell. He said no at first, but then changed his mind soon after.”

He describes it as being in tatty condition but not a ‘basket-case’ and the first job was to tackle the bodywork. Helped by a friend, the Covid lockdown was the perfect time to start on the project and it began with sorting some corrosion in the rear wheel-arches. It was then time for a thorough clean before the GTi was sent for a respray.

“I told the bodyshop there was no rush as I was in the process of buying a house and building a garage, so I only got it back quite recently. I’ve not really had a chance to use it much yet, but I’m looking forward to enjoying some drives.”

It will certainly be taken to plenty more shows this year, and Joe plans a bit more work including an overhaul of the brakes and a full restoration of the underneath. Once completed this should be one of the best ones on the road, and one that is sure to grab plenty of attention.

Despite its popularity when new the GTi is now a rare model with very few still left on the road. That makes this one a bit of a treat for enthusiasts of these lively little classics, and we are certainly pleased to have it at this year’s show.
