Anthony Lattka - VW Golf

Anthony Lattka - VW Golf

The legendary Golf is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and over eight generations it has found millions of buyers. This one dates from the first generation, and thanks to a lot of effort it’s a cracking example.

“I bought the car as a project back in 2018, and I knew it was going to need an extensive restoration. The work took four years and I wanted to do as much myself as possible, and I have to say I’m really proud of how it turned out.”

He adds that having already owned a Mk IV model he’d become really enthusiastic about VWs and with not many of these Mk 1s for sale in Scotland, where he lives, he just had to snap this one up. And being an early example only added to the appeal.

It was certainly a major project, with the bodyshell stripped back to bare metal and then re-painted by Anthony. The interior was also the subject of a complete re-trim, and plenty of time was spent ensuring the mechanicals were perfect; the engine was overhauled, the brakes were replaced and then the Golf was completely re-wired.

By the 2022 Classic Motor Show it was ready to be displayed for the first time, and the owner was thrilled with the reception it got. “It received so much attention, and it even ended up being one of Top Gear’s favourite cars. I’ve been to plenty more shows since, and it’s something that I always enjoy.

Anthony says that the car is very special to him, and that he had brilliant support from his wife, family and friends. It was a big achievement and we are sure that it will be a real treat for fans of the brilliant VW.
