James Walshe's Citroen Dyane 6
This little yellow Citroën has been performing as a daily driver since it rolled off the line in 1980 – serving as faithful family workhorse and, recently, performing as a camera vehicle for the current issue of Practical Classics! Not for the first time, photographer Matt Howell took the cover shot while standing out of the roof of a car that offers not just the right amount of height, but it’s a steady platform like no other, thanks to the Citroën’s unrivalled ability to smooth out Britain’s lumpiest Tarmac.
It’s easy on the driver, too. Those bouncy deckchair seats allow all occupants the chance to enjoy the view without being pounded by our wibbly wobbly roads. It last served as faithful camera platform when we shot a cover midway across the old Severn Bridge and created such a jam that we sparked our own Radio 2 travel report!
The car is extra special to James as his parents bought it many years ago – his mum and dad having owned his first one back in the early Seventies when they were rocking the full-on hippy look. The car has since travelled all over. It’s the mark of a true people’s car; from trips to the garden centre or tip, to epic adventures around Europe, here’s another little Citroën that simply cannot be stopped.
