Gregs la france a car so big its unreal
1926 American LaFrance Type 75.

It is a 1926 American LaFrance Type 75. It was originally a fire truck - there was a 750gpm water pump under seat and the rear body was like a pickup with ladders, hoses etc.

My car was in service in Pittsburgh from 1927 until 1969. I've attached a photograph of the car taken at it's Pittsburgh fire house.

American LaFrance produced fire trucks between 1873 and 2014 - primarily in Elmira, New York State (where mine was made). Others were produced in Toronto and, latterly, in Summerville, South Carolina.

The same basic model was produced from 1907 until 1929.

The engine is LaFrance's own - 6 cylinder; 6" stroke and 5½" bore - giving a displacement of 14.1 litres. The quoted power is 115hp.

The engine is configured in 3 blocks of two cylinders - but there are no separate cylinder heads. Although side valve, it's a cross-flow with inlet on the right and exhaust on the left. Valves are operated by two camshafts. There are twin spark plugs per cylinder (some versions had 3 plugs) - one set is powered by a magneto; the other by a coil/distributor/points.

The gearbox is 3-speed plus reverse driving side sprockets and then chain-drive to the rear wheels.

The car weighs just over 3 tonnes (with an almost empty fuel tank!)

This car was one of a small number modified by the factory during WW2. They added front brakes (16" drums), fitted a Zenith carb (in place of the original Schebler) and changed the steering wheel to a hideous 1940s item (now changed back to a period wheel).

The wheel rims are 24" diameter and use 38x7 tyres (I have a new pair on order right now).
