As most classic car owners will realise, modern replacement parts sometimes don’t have the quality or longevity of the originals. This is definitely the case with the Midget and Sprite clutch release bearing. The current ‘original specification’ Carbon bearings have a reputation for rapid wear and sometimes breaking up in use. As replacement requires the engine to be removed this is far from ideal.
In response to this several parts suppliers and individual owners of these cars, have developed replacements using roller bearings to increase longevity and improve the clutch performance.
At this years Classic Car and Restoration Show the Midget and Sprite Club will be demonstrating the replacement of the original clutch release bearing with a roller version made and donated by one of our Members.
Over the course of the weekend the engine and gearbox will be removed from the car, the clutch inspected and replaced if needed, then reassembled using the new bearing. The engine will then be refitted with all the ancillaries ready for starting at the close of the show.
Alan Anstead, who produces the bearing we are using, will be on hand during the show to answer any questions visitors may have.
