Derek Drinkwater – 1929 Dodge Panel Hot Rod
There are few things cooler in the classic car world than a genuine American hot rod, and this one is quite rare. It will certainly be an enjoyable project to complete, and is guaranteed plenty of attention out on the road.
“I’ve owned this one for around ten years, and found it in Reno, Nevada. I was at a swap meet and it caught my eye, and I ended up buying it along with another car. It’s definitely quirky, and although I’ve not got round to it yet it’s one I really want to restore.”
It had been partially built by the previous owner but not finished, so there is plenty of scope for Derek to put his own stamp on the finished machine. He admits there is a lot of work to do, but it will look amazing when it’s finished.
The V8 engine is a 1941 flathead Cadillac unit, so there will plenty of power and a great noise, but it hasn’t run in his ownership. And the car currently lacks both a transmission and a propellor shaft so those things are on the list to sort out.
As well as completing the running gear Derek will also need to source a steering column and fit a completely new wiring loom to this characterful American motor. At least the bodywork has had some attention in past, so that part of the project should be a little easier.
It’s not often that we see a car like this on display, so this one is definitely a bit of a treat for enthusiasts that enjoy something different. Once it’s finished we are certain that hot rod fans will love it, and can’t wait to see it again at a future show.
