Dave Watson – 1959 BMW Isetta
These tiny bubble cars are certainly amongst the classic car world’s quirkier offerings, but what makes this one so fascinating is that it has sat untouched in a garage for almost sixty years.
Originally supplied by a motorcycle dealer in Leamington Spa, it’s had just two owners from new and was taken off the road in the 1960s. And when it was offered to Dave he couldn’t resist.
“I’ve been involved with these cars for many years, and when the owner contacted me, I was keen to take a look. It appeared to be in sound condition, so I couldn’t really say no.”
He goes on to explain that the bodywork and chassis have just light rust so no welding will be required. The key issues to tackle are a seized engine and a lack of brakes, but neither will pose a problem for this experienced Isetta owner. The plan is to get it running and then focus on preservation rather than a full restoration.
“It was very much buried in the garage, so getting it out took quite a lot of effort” adds Dave. “It was a case of dragging it out into the open to see exactly what I had.” In remarkably original condition, we can certainly understand why he’s taking such a careful approach when it comes to getting it back on the road, and we can’t wait to see it again in the future.
This Isetta was built in the UK under licence from BMW and remained in production until 1963. In that time the Brighton works produced just over 26,000 examples in both left- and right-hand drive. This is a small car with a very big personality and is ideal for those after something a little different.
