Commonwealth Car Club Brings Games Cars and Hands-On Restoration to the Show

Visitors to the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show will find a fascinating mix of motoring history and hands-on expertise on the stand of the Commonwealth Car Club, where several distinctive cars will be showcased alongside a packed programme of live restoration demonstrations.

Among the highlights are four very different vehicles, each representing a chapter of British motoring: a Austin Metro, a powerful MG ZT 260 V8 SE, a classic Jaguar Mark 2, and a Rover Metro.

Two of these cars even have a unique claim to fame. The Jaguar and the Rover Metro both appeared in the spectacular opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, where 72 red, white and blue vehicles were arranged to create a giant Union Flag in the stadium, a memorable moment celebrating British culture and engineering.

At the show, the Rover Metro will take centre stage as club members carry out live maintenance and restoration work throughout the weekend. Visitors will be able to watch a variety of practical jobs being tackled in real time, offering a great insight into how classic cars are cared for and maintained.

The demonstrations will cover a wide range of essential classic car skills, including engine tune-ups, ignition timing checks, carburettor adjustment, spark plug servicing and coolant system maintenance. Suspension and braking work will also feature, with tasks such as brake pad replacement, wheel bearing inspections and shock absorber changes.

Beyond the mechanical work, the club will also demonstrate useful body and interior techniques, from paintless dent removal and rust prevention to panel removal, dashboard switch cleaning and minor seat repairs. Visitors will also be able to learn about basic electrical troubleshooting, including battery testing, fuse replacement and lighting repairs.

Alongside the hands-on demonstrations, the club will also highlight the essential tools every classic car owner should have in their garage, helping enthusiasts build the confidence to tackle their own maintenance projects at home.

With cars that have played a role in a major international sporting ceremony and a stand packed with practical restoration knowledge, the Commonwealth Car Club’s display promises to be both historic and hands-on, a perfect example of the passion and skills that keep classic cars on the road.
