Cavalier and Chevette Club Members “Clubbed together” to raise funds to purchase WNA 258S, a 1978 Vauxhall Cavalier Mk1 1900 Automatic “WINNIE” and here's why...

The 1978 Vauxhall Cavalier Mk1 1900 Automatic “WINNIE” was previously owned by Vince Poole the club's late Chairman and to prevent it from going to the scrapyard, they put their hands in their pockets to purchase it. The aim has been to make the car road worth again. Once it gets to that point, it'll go to a closed auction with sealed bids so a club member could potentially purchase the car and keep in the club in memory of Vince.

Storage has not been kind to the car and there are various issues that need fixing before the it can be presented for a MOT inspection to determine any further repairs that might be need.

With all this in mind, “WINNIE” will form a centre piece on of the Cavalier and Chevette Club (4-560) at the Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show, with Discovery 2019 at the NEC Birmingham.  The idea came about after a discussion between the current Club Chairman and a number of other club members at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery back in November 2018.  They thought it a great idea to get the car to the show as it can be worked on by club members in the warm and dry and it also gives prospective club members that may be interested in purchasing the car a chance to come and have a look at it.

Vince was always a big supporter of the show’s be it with displaying one of his car’s or just helping out on the club stand. He would be touched by the fact the car will not only be the centre piece of the stand but will be worked on at the event as well.

Jobs to be carried out at the event include:-

  • Ignition switch
  • Coolant Hoses - Radiator top and bottom hoses
  • Radiator with oil cooler
  • Rear Brake shoes with spring kit and possible cylinders
  • Front Pads
  • Exhaust Centre pipe/box and rear silencer

Why not call past the Club stand and see how club members are getting on with the car.  While you are there why not check the other cars out on the stand a Vauxhall Chevette HS, Vauxhall Cavalier Mk2 SRi and a Vauxhall Cavalier Mk3 GSi 2000.
